Animation History and People
  • History – Animation at large was seen as early as the late 1800’s. Many early advances and techniques came about around the 1920’s and aside from technology much has not changed in the last century. In fact, the people that create animated characters have much the same job they would have 70 or 80 years ago.

  • People – There are a few notable figures in the development of animation techniques. Georges Melies was a film maker that contributed to the introduction of stop-motion animation that applies the method of stopping a scene, exchanging it for another and continuing on with the scene. Emile Cohl created cartoon strips and began creating films with a sequence of images moving slightly beginning with a stick figure and morphing objects. Winsor McCay took Cohl’s concept to a whole new level employing a team of artists to create cels with changing backgrounds and characters. And, Otto Messmer introduced such characters as Felix the cat with a personality that won over fans everywhere.
