Stop Motion Animation

Stop motion animation is the making of a film where static objects appear to move. This concept takes an image of static objects, these are then moved slightly, and another picture is taken. This process is repeated until a number of images have been taken and the scene is complete. At the conclusion of this process all the images are strung together like traditional animation and played rapidly giving the effect of movement.

There are different types of stop motion animation. Sometimes clay is used to form the objects and characters, other times puppets are used. There is also a form called pinscreen animation where a number of pins are placed evenly on a screen and then pushed and pulled to create the appropriate visual effect. Commonly, cutouts and images are used for stop motion animation either with large size or even paper images.

Another type of stop motion animation called time lapse is used to create the animated movement of apparently slow moving objects like stars. This technology uses a slowly opening and closing shutter on a camera to film clips of a scene over a long duration of time.

Stop motion animation began around 1898 and has made huge advances since. One of the most notable figures using stop motion animation today is Tim Burton who creates full length feature films.
