Personal Professional Goals

The best way to advance in business is by setting personal professional goals. What this means is that by setting clear expectations regarding what you would like to accomplish, defining what accomplishment is, and tracking the progress of these you can advance both personally and professionally. By doing this even the simplest job or task can become a milestone for achievement.

Many of us get bogged down by not feeling that we have achieved any significant personal professional goals. The main reason, I believe, is that we have not defined what we would like to achieve, and if we have, not well. Maybe we set expectations too high like making millions of dollars. Possibly we define our objectives by what others believe that we should be doing. Either way, it is imperative to define personal professional goals that can mark our progress in our current position and as a worker in general. These can be as simple as defining a plan for increasing pay and then reaching each objective, setting deadlines for tasks outside of our normal duties to help the business, or even just learning a new skill. These objectives don’t have to include money or recognition. They could just be accomplishments that you have defined for yourself in order to improve as an individual and a worker.

Take some time at home or at the office and define some personal professional goals. Think about what is available to you in new skills, income opportunities, or even interpersonal communication. Within each area that you would like to improve make note of everything that you could do to accomplish this and define specifically what can be done, how, and when it can be done by. Write these down somewhere that will remind you regularly to address each one, and little by little scratch off items as you accomplish them.

As with any goal setting process, personal professional goals should be marked with some type of reward. Some achievements will be rewards themselves like overcoming fears and some will be monetary like accomplishing tasks for increased pay. Make sure that there is an incentive otherwise the goals may never even be considered.

With this in mind start setting and achieving personal professional goals.
