Why Write Business Plans

The thought of starting and running a business can be so exciting that you may think, “Why write business plans?” The fact is that business plans serve two very distinct and very important purposes. A company, like a ship, needs to be steered on its course and having a plan can help achieve this. Also, sometimes you may be the only one with the vision for your business and you may require buy-in from others.

Why write business plans for new companies? New organizations especially need some plan laid out to achieve goals. It is much easier to accomplish objectives when everything is clearly defined. If you have isolated your resources, market, finances, and team, you can then utilize them to your fullest advantage. Building a business without a solid business plan is like building a wall without having all the bricks together, sure you can fill the gaps with mortar, but it’s just not going to hold up as well.

If for some reason you have no issue in keeping track of all the items relevant to running a company, you may still be saying “Why write business plans, I have it under control.” In this regard I do not doubt your intelligence or capability, but what if you want partners, or financing. Certainly, to convince another person of business potential, especially a potential investor, you need more than just capability and a dynamic personality. If you were making a decision to put time or money into a project wouldn’t you want to know as much as you could about the investment?
